The core objectives of the network are:

1. To ensure that the UK is at the forefront of research in SSME, by developing and promoting UK capabilities while forging strong links with international communities in the field;
2. To create a critical mass of researchers who can contribute to the development of a UK research agenda for the attention of the Research Councils and other research sponsors;
3. To encourage new collaborations beyond those of single discipline researchers; To facilitate a shared understanding of goals and opportunities for research, education, and practice, between network partners; To create a web based rich set of resources;
4. To identify opportunities for further funding to pursue research and educational objectives, and to deepen links with industrial practitioners so as to identify potential for collaboration in this.
